That was always the Holy Grail of the character. That was always the heart of the show to me. Were you satisfied with Hank and Karen's ending?ĭavid Duchovny: If Hank wasn't going to die, which is kind of what I wanted, I wanted Hank and Karen to get back together. Summer TV: Get scoop on on your favorite returning shows Although Karen admits she hasn't been totally won over, she holds Hanks hand and eventually kisses him before the duo flies off into the sunset. But is the man behind Hank Moody satisfied with the show's ending? chatted with Duchovny to get his thoughts on whether Hank and Karen will actually make it and why he originally envisioned a much more grim ending to the story. "It'll never be over as long as there's you and there's me and there's hope." That hope was enough for Karen to let Hank sit beside her on the flight back to New York for Becca's wedding. "I didn't know how to finish it because it's not over," he said. But here's what I know for sure: Our time in the sun has been a thing of absolute f-ing beauty." Hank continued until his letter abruptly ended. ![]() "Any story with me at the center of it will never be anything less than a big smiling mess. And after also playing matchmaker between Levon's mom Julia ( Heather Graham) and Hank's boss Rick Rath ( Michael Imperioli), Hank left his Porsche behind and headed to the airport for one final romantic gesture."Has it been perfect? Hardly," Hank read aloud from his letter to Karen. Although they began the episode on different pages with regard to their daughter Becca ( Madeleine Martin) and her sudden wedding, Hank eventually came around - with a little help from his friends.ĭavid Duchovny shares his favorite episodes of CalifornicationDuring the course of the episode, Hank finally helped his son Levon ( Oliver Cooper) learn how to try to have a meaningful relationship and also inspired Charlie ( Evan Handler) to fight for Marcy ( Pamela Adlon) instead of letting her sleep with Stu ( Stephen Tobolowsky) for a million bucks. He doesn't actually LIKE the behaviors and wants to marry the woman who left him and spend more time with his daughter.Californication's Hank Moody said it best on the Showtime comedy's series finale: "I'm a sucker for happy endings."Īfter seven seasons of breakups, breakdowns, and tons of drug- and alcohol-fueled bad behavior, the love story of Hank ( David Duchovny) and Karen ( Natascha McElhone) finally came to a close. Hank is a family man who engages in behaviors because he has no brakes to stop him i.e. But the story line is not as prurient as all of that suggests. There is constant language, smoking, sex, frank discussions about sex, drug use viewed as acceptable, nudity, and references to all forms of adult themes. For those concerned about content for kids: DO NOT WATCH THIS SERIES. He's the lovable bad boy with a heart of gold. It also gets very far away from the Jerry Seinfeld, man-child type characters that are romantically inept. I loved the characters and although it is not realistic, it is an interesting venue for the observations made about what destructive behaviors women are willing to put up with. The series calls for a bit of a stretch, asking the audience to believe that his power to attract women never once led to an indiscretion while he was living with his non-wife. Duchovney's girl-getting eyes have the same effect on every female opportunity that comes his way in the story as they do on his millions of female fans. The whole series is about his desire to win her back, his writers' block at the loss of his muse, and his role as a father all in the context of his emotional instability. Hank Moody (Duchovney) is a Los Angeles-based writer whose long-time girlfriend, with whom he has a child but never bothered to marry, has left him. There is definitely a high volume of disreputable behavior, and the show is not for kids, but there is a good story here. That's SO not what Californication is about, and frankly, it's a stupid title. Maybe I missed something, but the promos of this series made it look like one long ad for a freewheeling guy living a hedonistic Hollywood lifestyle.
